, according to a new analysis by 2020, Asia's biological base of polylactic acid (PLA) resins production number will be on the list of the world more than North America, because on the one hand, Asia has a large number of agricultural raw materials, on the other hand, thanks to strong government incentives.
It is estimated that the global number of PLA capacity to 182000 tons from 2011 climbed to 2020 tonnes in 721000, and the productivity number is expected to be close to half of Asia, more than 350000 tons, according to the bureau of national innovation and Nova Institute in Germany Hurth GmbH in a conference held recently in Thailand has made these predictions.
Currently, North America is the world's largest PLA producer, accounting for two-thirds of the world's total production and over 120,000 tons, which is expected to increase to about 200,000 tons by 2020.
Headquarters is located in Bangkok, Thailand, the NIA's senior project consultant Wolfgang Baltus said: "the government has introduced a variety of incentives and support policy package is one of Asia's rapid growth of production capacity: the power", he points out, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and other Asian governments to support the development of all types of biological base material.
Baltus on September 17 to 19, a conference Flexpo Bangkok in Thailand and in the following interview said: "of course, the region is rich in raw materials is important driving force." Flexpo is sponsored by the houston-based American chemical market resources corporation (CMR).
Baltus is Nova Institute bioplastics trend expert committee members, and help to make the think tank on Asia's biological plastic yield forecast, he said, this part Numbers will be included in Nova is releasing a new report.
Speaking at the Flexpo conference, he said demand for the PLA remains low in the local Asian market, which means most of the additional PLA capacity in the region will be exported.
Thailand is expected to become a new center for bioplastics. Thailand's largest plastics producer, PTT Chemical publicco.ltd., for example, bought a 50% stake in U.S. PLA giant Natureworks LLC last year. In addition, the Thai government has invested huge amounts of research funding in the field of bioplastics since 2008.
Baltus said that Natureworks currently has 85 percent of the PLA production in the world, and even if other companies expand globally, Natureworks could still account for more than 50 percent of total global production capacity by 2020.
Baltus said, the study also showed that Chinese PLA resin production in 2007-2011 "drastically reduced", mainly because of China's enterprises in the lactic acid raw materials on the quality of the pass, and lactic acid is constitute the main components of the PLA.
China's PLA exports fell from 4,400 tonnes in 2007 to 237 tonnes in 2009, and remained low in 2010 and 2011. Driven by this, he said, China's PLA imports increased from about 1,200 tonnes in 2007 to 4,000 tonnes last year.
Baltus said that during the preparation of the report, they interviewed more than 20 companies in the PLA production chain.
